Application Protocol for OASIS® Wound Matrix

These recommendations are designed to serve only as a general guideline, and are not intended to supersede institutional protocols or professional clinical judgment concerning patient care.

Prepare 1. Prepare
Prepare the wound bed to make it free of exudate and devitalized tissue. Wait for any bleeding to stop before applying OASIS® Wound Matrix.

Apply 2. Apply
Measure the wound and select the appropriately sized sheet of dry OASIS® Wound Matrix. Cut the sheet to size and position it to cover the wound surface, extending slightly beyond the margins. If multiple sheets are necessary, overlap edges.

Anchor 3. Anchor
As required, anchor OASIS® Wound Matrix using the physician’s preferred fixation method (e.g., STERI-STRIP®, tissue sealant, bolsters, dissolvable clips, sutures, or staples).

Rehydrate 4. Rehydrate
Gently rehydrate OASIS® Wound Matrix
with sterile saline.

Dress 5. Dress
Apply a non-adherent primary wound dressing over the OASIS® Wound Matrix (e.g., ADAPTIC®, VASELINE® Gauze, or MEPITEL®). The primary dressing is usually changed on Day 7 to avoid product disruption.

Cover 6. Cover
Select appropriate secondary dressing based on type of wound and amount of exudate. OASIS® Wound Matrix may be used under compression bandages.

Add 7. Reassess
The wound should be free of infection and necrosis. Carefully remove any remaining loose product around the wound edge as needed. If necessary, reapply OASIS® Wound Matrix over previously absorbed application.

Reassess 8. Reapply
Reapply OASIS® Wound Matrix every 7 days or as needed, repeating steps 2 through 6 as appropriate. If a gel forms on the wound surface, do not attempt to forcibly remove. Gently rinse the wound surface, leaving the extracellular matrix (ECM) gel intact.
See below for details on caramelization.

Caramelization part1

Caramelization part2

What to Expect: Caramelization

  • Successful absorption of OASIS® Wound Matrix may form a caramel-colored or off-white gel
  • Do not remove this gel by debriding
  • This caramelization contains extracellular matrix, which continues to replace deficient and missing ECM in the wound
  • Gently cleanse the wound surface with sterile saline, then apply new OASIS® Wound Matrix if necessary

Note:

  • If infection, chronic inflammation, allergic reaction, or excessive redness, pain, swelling, or blistering occur, use of OASIS® Wound Matrix should be discontinued
  • OASIS® Wound Matrix is contraindicated for third-degree burns and in patients with known allergies to porcine materials
